Michael Raines qualified MB ChB in Sheffield 1980.
His ophthalmic training took him around the country and included Units in Sheffield, Windsor, Manchester and Birmingham.
He gained the Diploma in Ophthalmology in 1984.
He was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (FRCS) in 1985.
In 1989 he was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth).
He was appointed a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon to Victoria Hospital Blackpool in 1991.
In Blackpool he was one of the first surgeons in the country to introduce regular phaco emulsification cataract surgery that revolutionised the cataract procedure.
Mr Raines has performed many thousands of successful cataract operations with unrivalled results.
He also set up the Oculo-Plastic Service for the Fylde Coast area.
Mr Raines was trained in the traditional methods and is able to perform most types of surgeries although he now specialises in cataract, oculo-plastic, glaucoma and macular degeneration.
In 2012 he left the National Health Service and now solely practices privately.

Graduate of Manchester University Medical School in 1983 – MBChB with Honours in Physiology and Biochemistry, Mr Chitkara trained as an Eye surgeon in Manchester and North-East England passing his specialist post-graduate exams and becoming a fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologist (FRCOphth) in 1993. He developed a passion for corrective (refractive) eye surgery during his specialist training in Cornea and Refractive Surgery in USA. The fellowship was completed with distinction under Professor Marguerite McDonald in New Orleans in 1995. Prof McDonald is the first person in the world to perform Laser eye surgery and a world-renowned authority in Corneal and Laser Eye surgery.
